Interview: Jackie Clarke, Associate Director of Stewardship and Donor Engagement

January 3, 2024

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Jackie Clarke and I’m the Associate Director of Stewardship and Donor Engagement at Humber River Health Foundation. I joined the team in October 2023 — on Halloween!

What led you to joining the team at Humber River Health Foundation?

I’ve been in the not-for-profit space for over eight years now. I started my career at University Health Network and then moved into an academic setting. What intrigued me about Humber was the opportunity to get back into fundraising within a hospital setting, having more on-site interactions with donors and patients. The innovative and well-thought-out structure of Humber as a new hospital is something that stood out to me. Being able to contribute to the innovative research and advancements within the hospital is fulfilling.

Schulich Family Medicine Teaching Unit

“The Schulich Family Medicine Teaching Unit opens up access to family practitioners in our underserved community.” says Jackie.

What are some of your favourite initiatives at Humber?

I love Pepper the robot! Seeing how Pepper provides comfort to paediatric patients during challenging times is heartwarming.

Additionally, the Schulich Family Medicine Teaching Unit is fantastic! It opens up access to family practitioners in our underserved community, relieving stress on our Apotex Emergency Department and improving overall patient care, while also training the next generation of Family Doctors.

Accuvein Vein Finder

“The Accuvein Vein Finder is remarkable within our Cancer Care Program, helping healthcare staff easily find and access their patients’ veins, putting many of our patients at ease.” says Jackie.

What are some of your favorite technological initiatives at Humber?

One technological initiative that stands out is the AccuVein “vein finder”. It’s remarkable within our Cancer Care Program, helping healthcare staff easily find and access their patients’ veins, putting many of our patients at ease. We even did live demonstrations during our Celebration of Thanks donor appreciation event last summer, and the positive response was incredible.

Toffee the dog

“During the summer, I play baseball and love going on hikes, especially with my dog Toffee.” says Jackie.

What do you love to do outside of work?

I’m very active! During the summer, I play baseball and love going on hikes, especially with my dog Toffee. We like to frequent the Brickworks for walks. It’s a favourite spot of ours!

What inspires you to do the work you do?

I find inspiration in knowing that, even in a small way, we are making a difference in our community. Working with patients, hearing their stories, and collaborating with passionate donors who want to give back. The prospect of contributing to future innovations in healthcare is also a driving force for me.
