When your heart is telling you something is the right thing to do, you should do it. That’s how I felt when I took on the role of Campaign Chair for the new Humber River Hospital – it’s the right thing to do, it’s as simple as that. The hospitals in our catchment area are showing their age – we all deserve better, we need a new hospital.
The new HRH will stand among Toronto’s most important hospitals. The government has already come forward to support this vision. Now, the whole community has a chance to step up. It’s easy to see that there is a shortfall from the funding that the government provides and it’s up to the community to kick in the rest – it’s up to all of us. I truly believe there is a responsibility among those who are able to give to support these types of projects. There is a greater justification to support regional hospitals such as HRH versus downtown hospitals – while these projects are indeed worthwhile, the greater need is here.
Our catchment area is comprised of such diversity – HRH treats patients from approximately 140 countries and together they speak more than 70 languages. As well, this hospital is very important to Apotex – we have had a long association with HRH and many of our employees have benefited from the care provided at the hospital. As well, there is a very personal connection to Humber for me – both of my sons were born there.
This campaign, and indeed this new hospital, is something totally new and unique, something that has never been done before on this scale. For donors, it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of something that will play a critical role in defining the future of healthcare.
I believe in Humber River Hospital and our bright future – I hope you do too.
