Interview: Chanchal Chakrabarti (Sisi), Planned Giving Advisory Committee

February 2, 2023

We know that leaving a gift in your Will (and other types of planned giving) may be a big decision, which is why we created the Planned Giving Advisory Committee, a group of professional advisors committed to supporting our Aspen Grove Society. Our Committee includes people specialized in the areas of legal, estate, tax, insurance, and financial planning. Today we would like to introduce you to Sisi, an expert in strategic planned giving and tax efficient strategies.

“Many people want to give back, however not everyone understands their own ability to do so, which is where I can help,” says Sisi. “Planned Giving doesn’t need to be complicated. My goal is to make giving simple.”

Tell us a little about yourself!

My Name is Chanchal Chakrabarti and I go by Sisi. With well over two decades of leadership at Sunlife, I decided to start a boutique Trusts, Estate & Financial Planning practice focused on Charitable Giving in 2021. We assist clients with Strategic Planned Giving and Tax Efficient Strategies while managing family and business transitions. I am married to Smita and we are married now for 33 years. I love to read, travel and meet people.

Why are you passionate about Humber River Hospital?

Healthcare is a very noble profession where people give selflessly. I have always remembered the saying, “We are the beneficiaries of the past, trustees of the present and architects of the future”.

I am very impressed with the commitment of all the people associated with Humber River Hospital. The way you all handled COVID-19 was nothing short of heroic!

Humber River Hospital Foundation gives me a springboard to leverage my passion of helping others by giving back.

What do you hope to accomplish on our Planned Giving Advisory Committee?

The Planned Giving Advisory Committee gives me a chance to do something meaningful and help others make a difference by being a catalyst. Many people want to give back, however not everyone understands their own ability to do so, which is where I can help. Planned Giving doesn’t need to be complicated. My goal is to make giving simple.

“The technology used in Humber River Hospital’s Robotic Surgery Program is amazing,” says Sisi.

In your opinion, what are the most interesting ways technology is being used at Humber?

The technology used in Humber River Hospital’s Robotic Surgery Program is amazing, and the information wall in the Command Centre wherein you are monitoring patients from the time they come in to discharge and the proactive way that this is being done is outstanding.

A true gem in the city!

What is something awesome you’ve done in the past year?

Making Giving Simple!

Charitable giving and the associated impact is still misunderstood. It has been very rewarding to see people opening their hearts up for others and we have been able to show some friends the opportunity and the benefits of strategic Planned Giving.

Also, we decided to host a special screening of Avatar for the staff at Humber Hospital as personally I wanted to take an opportunity to thank these fearless warriors who gave their all to save many of us during the worst of the pandemic. They don’t expect anything and the best we could have done for the holiday is give them something that they can enjoy with their families. I think we were able to do just that. Mission accomplished!

What is something you wish everyone understood about leaving a gift in their Will?

If you’re donating via cash, stop it now and speak to one of our Foundation members! There are many ways to donate that let your money go farther, so speak with an expert in this area and learn more about options like leaving a bequest in your Will or donating using different means.

I’m happy to have a no obligating discussion with anyone who reaches out through the Foundation team. You don’t have to be rich to give, you only need to have a big heart. We’ll create the money you need to give and can assist you in making an impact, creating a legacy, and helping to fund the future of healthcare, which the community will thank you for!
